Cabin Harris

30 Jan 2012 /

(to be built autumn 2015)

The cabin is situated at the beautiful island of Harris, in the Hebrides / Scotland. The site is a slightly sloping hill with striking view towards the Taransay Island, a green coloured lagoon and the mountains of the region. On a closer scale a small canyon and the beautiful heather meadow of Harris characterises the site.

The cabin is inspired by the classic private house in Harris: A long one-story gabled house, placed in between two solid gable walls, both with chimneys. These buildings are mostly placed carefully in – and often parallel with the lines of the landscape. In old ruins these two gable walls often remain even though the rest of the building has vanished

We have established not two, but three of these classic gables and designed a cabin in between them. The cabin is (like the traditional houses) long and but slim. It curves back and forth with the landscape, creating natural sheltered spaces around it. These spaces are protected from the main wind direction, but opens up towards both the sun and the unique view. The spaces inside the cabin balances the view out towards the north and the more intimate and protected landscape to the south west of the building.
